Useful study links

Here you can find a list of links to websites and online resources which are useful when doing research for ASNC-related topics, be it for a supervision, dissertation, project or just independent reading.

Viking Society for Northern Research ↗

List of publications available online as PDFs. Very useful for Scandinavian-history related primary sources. You can also find the Old Norse language textbooks online on this page.

The Viking Age: c. 790-1066 ↗

A resource for students and teachers of Viking Age history, society and culture from primary schools up to undergraduate level (including GCSE History courses and the OCR A-Level course “The Viking Age”).

The Library of Old Norse

A collection of eddic poems and Icelandic sagas from the Íslenzk fornrit editions with English and Norwegian translations, run by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Oslo.

Old Norse for Beginners ↗

A free online course in Old Norse. It is very, very old, but quite simple and accessible (which can’t always be said about the textbook used in class…)

Bosworth Toller ↗

The best online Old English dictionary.

Old English Aerobics ↗

A very useful dictionary and anthology of Old English texts. It provides tables with conjugation of verbs and declination of adjectives.

eDIL ↗

The Electronic Dictionary of the Irish Language. Can be rather trying to use, but a necessity for doing any Old/Middle Irish work. Make sure to make good use of the Advanced Search > Inflected Forms feature if you’re having trouble!

The Annals of Ulster/Chronicle of Ireland ↗

Very helpfully ordered with a handy sidebar.

CELT ↗

The Corpus of Electronic Texts. Very useful for Irish history, loads of resources.

Anglo-Saxon History Bibliography ↗

An immense PDF of some 280 pages, last updated 2007, with almost every book related to Anglo-Saxon history you could wish for. Includes a brief description of each item on the bibliography

Fordham University Internet Medieval Sourcebook↗

A quite old, but very complete list of online, translated primary sources regarding the medieval era, sorted into all sorts of topics which you might not even have expected to find. Very useful if you want a particular primary source on a particular issue. Compiled by P. Halsall

Project Gutenberg ↗

A huge repository of eBooks including many related to ASNC, such as Bede’s Ecclesiastical History, Snorri Sturluson’s works, Nennius and others. Beware that the books on Gutenberg are usually very old editions or translations, so there are usually better ones in existence. But they are free!
